Why Should You Learn Spanish?

IF YOU ARE A US CITIZEN, YOU WILL SEE A DRASTIC INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF YOUR HISPANIC NEIGHBORS VERY SOON. OUR NATION'S DEMOGRAPHICS ARE SHIFTING RAPIDLY.

Meet New People
In ten years, it is projected that 25% of the US population will be "Hispanic." As the "Hispanic" make-up of our population continues to rise, the ethnocentricity of our nation's citizens remains stagnant. As we ignore the "Hispanic" cultures, we fail to recognize that they are part of our own nation's culture. We also fail to distinguish among the different "Hispanic" cultures, frequently confusing "Hispanic" with Mexican. Yet, Puerto Ricans play a major role in the culture of New York City, and more than half of the residents of Miami are of Cuban descent. There are also more and more recent immigrants from other Spanish-speaking countries, as well. Today, 13% of our nation's population speaks Spanish as a primary language. The "Hispanic" cultures are no longer exclusive to Florida and the southwestern states; they are spreading rapidly. We must integrate, not isolate. The reason that you see "Hispanic" in quotes is because Spanish-speakers rarely refer to themselves as "Hispanic." They identify themselves with their native country (i.e.: Mexicans, Costa Ricans, Spaniards, etc.). The word "Hispanic" was created by the US government in order to simplify paperwork! Similarly, we refer to ourselves as Americans, not "Anglos" (a term which refers to all English-speakers).
